INTERVIEW:
What is your religious background? How did you get into the ministry?
These meetings were where my great-grandfather was saved and then later called to preach. Many revivals sprung from these meetings my family would preach in, where many were saved and called into the ministry. I am proud to have a heritage of followers of Jesus. Even though I grew up in the church, I did not have a personal relationship with Jesus until the Lord encountered me at 19 years old.
I was steeped in sin and addicted to drugs and running as far as I could from the Lord, but one day on my bedroom floor Jesus encountered me, and met me there, and I surrendered my life that day and was truly delivered and set free. It was a marking moment in my life that forever changed me. I got into a discipleship class very quickly and began to really grow in my faith. Even though I am grateful for the background of my family and the foundation it set for me, I still had to know this Jesus for myself.
I did not feel the divine call into the ministry until a few years later. I was doing the work of ministry with many others, and began helping in the youth group, which was really a passion of mine. I desired to help other young people who struggled like I did.
It was after I was married and had small children, I was attending college, and preparing to go into the nursing program, when I felt the Lord speak to me personally. He said to me one night, when I was filling out the paperwork to send in to enter the nursing program, “Is this what I have called you to?” I paused and He asked me again. I’ll never forget it. I, of course responded to Him, “no”.
This was the day I truly felt the call into the ministry. I desired to give my everything to Jesus and fulfill my assignment on this earth for His glory. Therefore, I did not go into the nursing program. I ended up leaving college to pursue full-time ministry. I feel the apple did not fall far from the tree when it comes to my family, I ended up stepping into the heritage my family had come from.
What is the WV Prayer Alliance? What is your role there?
The WV Prayer Alliance is a network of intercessors, prayer groups and praying churches that span across all 55 counties of WV. WV Prayer Alliance is currently celebrating 8 years of building unity through prayer for awakening across the Mountain State. Through the WV Prayer Alliance, the state is organized into 10 prayer regions which work to connect all 55 counties. ( https://www.wvprayer.com )
WV Prayer Alliance is part of the Appalachia Prayer Coalition, a network of prayer that is connecting the 423 counties of Appalachia from New York to Mississippi. ( https://www.apcwv.com )This is all under the direction and leading of Apostle/Pastor Jay Morgan from Jesse, WV.
I connected to the WV Prayer Alliance in 2019. My role in this ministry is only a small part of what the fullness of this ministry entails. I am a co-coordinator along with Becky Keener for our region, which is the New River Region, consisting of Webster County, Nicholas County, Fayette County and Raleigh County. I help in organizing prayer gatherings for our region alongside Becky, and I also lead prayer for Fayette County.
We call believers to come together in unity and prayer to see God’s will be done on earth as it is in Heaven and to see His Kingdom advance. I love the WV Prayer Alliance because it consists of many different people with different denominational backgrounds, which I believe makes up His Church, the Bride of Christ. The focus is Jesus and prayer with intentional action to see awakening come to our land, and to see many souls birthed into the Kingdom of Heaven.
How long have you been singing? And what is the story behind the CD you released, "West Virginia" ? Where can people listen to it?
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I grew up singing in the church alongside of my sister. Singing has always been a passion of mine especially when I truly began to sing to Jesus and for His glory alone. Worship and honor to the Lord in music and song became the anthem of my heart. To know we can minister to the Lord in song and it be a sweet aroma to Him keeps me in awe and wonder. I believe we were created for worship; and we get to choose what we worship. I choose Jesus.
The song 'West Virginia' was written in 1982 by my dad, BB Secrist. This song was originally released in Nashville by my dad in 1983. He wrote it while driving a truck for the coal mines. He was on his way to work when he began to sing the lyrics and while at work, he finished the writing of this song, 'West Virginia'.
My dad released his song at the West Virginia State Capitol before the Senate and Governor prior to the Governor's Address. It was put on a bill to be voted on for the WV State Song, but John Denver’s piece we all know as “Country Roads”, was chosen.
I believe the song was a prophetic release in 1983 that rang throughout the state of West Virginia. I told my dad, whether he realized it or not, the song carries a prophetic call, "a clarion call!" ; 'West Virginia' carries a two-fold meaning of heritage and a call for prodigals to come home!
The picture on the front of the single is the original picture of my great great grandmother’s log cabin where she held the prayer meetings I referred to earlier, and where my great grandfather was saved. I re-released the song, with my own twist on it, in 2023. You can find it on all media platforms, such as iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify and Youtube along with many others.
I believe with all my heart that the song, “West Virginia”, will ring again throughout the hills of Appalachia and release this two-fold purpose within it to spark a fire in moms, grandmothers, dads and grandfathers to either pick up or begin leaving a legacy and heritage within families of WV. I also believe a clarion call will ring out into these hills and hollers to “woo” the prodigal back home into the arms of the Father! (Deuteronomy 6:4-11, Luke 15:11-24)
How long have you been the Program Director and morning DJ for the Contemporary Christian Radio Station 88.7 Spirit FM ? What do you enjoy most about these roles?
I have been with the radio station, serving as the Program Director since 2014. We were originally 106.9 Spirit FM and then became 88.7 Spirit FM. Rick and Susan Lewis are the owners and operators of this local Contemporary Christian Radio station. I have been honored to work alongside them to reach our community.
What I love most about working for this station is first providing positive, encouraging and uplifting music to our listeners. I love the connection God gives with new people and the opportunity to pray and encourage many to follow Jesus, whether for the first time, or to keep going and not grow weary in well doing (Galatians 6:9-10).
What motivates you to share Christ with others? What challenges do you face in sharing the Gospel of Christ in West Virginia? ..and what are some of the unique blessings in our state?
I am hopeful though and believe that WV is the heartbeat to the nation. I believe God uses the foolish things to confound the wise and that He can use little ole’ WV to reach the nation for His glory. I love WV and the fact that I was born here, which compels me even more to fight for this state and to turn it to the Lord.
Anyone who visits our state cannot deny its beauty. I believe it is one of the greatest masterpieces God created and we can be a place that rises and is known for our love for our Creator. Many believed nothing good could come from Nazareth, but our Savior, Jesus Christ, came from a place much overlooked. I believe much good for the Kingdom and glory of God can come out of WV. There is hope for us yet.
How important do you think it is for Christians to be engaged with government, including participating in the voting process for their local, state and federal government?
I believe as Christians, we should have a vital role in government and the voting process in all areas. I believe as Christians we are called to be gatekeepers. We have an opportunity to engage in what comes through the gates of our cities, counties, state and nation.
I believe this nation was founded upon moral and godly principles and we have lost our way in that. We have opportunities through the governmental mountain of influence to turn the tide and call people to (2 Chronicles 7:14). This is an important reason why I lead prayer for Fayette County.
As believers, we can pray and help impact and encourage others to vote biblically and morally, which in turn can help place people into position in our government that will stand and fight for strong biblical standards and beliefs. We need the authentic Christians holding office in all arenas. I believe this will help turn our nation back to the Lord.
While I believe it is important we do not neglect our part in this process, I also believe Christians have become too dependent upon Government when our dependency should be in Jesus Christ alone. Government has become an idol to some and has taken the place of the Lord.
There is no doubt in Scripture, God used many in governmental positions to accomplish His will. For example, in the book of Daniel; Daniel along with Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, also known as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. This is a part of history where these men held high positions within the government; yet they did not bow to the government when the king demanded their worship to an idol. Instead of bowing, they risked losing their lives and being thrown into the fire.
There are several other examples scripture gives us like, Joseph, Esther and Mordecai. These people held positions of governmental influence and were used by the Lord. I believe it is important to honor those in governmental positions, but not at the cost of bowing to anything other than God alone. These are the kinds of people we need in office, those who will not shy away from their faith and stand their ground. And as Christians, we have a responsibility to help get them there.
You are the author of the published book, "The Day He Answered: Keeping the Testimony" and have a new one on the way... please share what each book is about; what themes do you cover? Where can people find your books?
The first book, “The Day He Answered: Keeping the Testimony” is a record and an account of a revival that broke out in Mt. Nebo, WV. It stemmed from a youth event I held back in 2019, called, ETO which stands for Expect the Outpouring.
This revival, which later became known as the Summersville Outpouring, led to 350-400 people giving their lives to Jesus and 450 or more being filled with the Holy Spirit. We witnessed multiple salvations and healings take place. This revival lasted for 10 weeks bringing together multiple churches, all from different denominations, together under one roof where we witnessed God doing more than we could imagine.
God asked me to document this when it happened, I did not realize it would become a book to mark a moment in WV. It has personal accounts and testimonies of miracles that happened, and it also carries weight and history of what I believe led to this revival breaking out.
My new book, “Your Rejection; His Righteousness”, comes out in March 2026. It is my personal testimony of how Jesus found me in the state I was in; He rescued me and set me on the path I am on today. I share my life before Jesus, and I lead into how I met Him. I share encouragement of how to stay in the good fight of faith as well. It is an encouragement and an evangelistic tool to reach people for the Lord and let them know they do not have to remain where they are. There is real hope and real help that the Lord gives.
As the Director of Isaiah 42 Ministries, please tell us how this ministry came about and what your vision is for this outreach. Why "Isaiah 42" ? How do you connect with others through this ministry?
Isaiah 42 Ministries was created in 2018. I created the ministry based on things I felt the Lord speaking and leading me in over the years, but I did not do anything with the ministry until I felt the release from the Lord to do so in 2022. This ministry is based upon the scripture, (Isaiah 42:1-9) highlighting verses 6-7:
“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. Isaiah 42:6-7
The mission of Isaiah 42 Ministries is to demonstrate the righteousness of God by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit and preach the Truth of the Gospel with the expectation of opening the eyes of the blind, freeing captives from prison, and releasing those who set in dark dungeons. I believe many are setting in a spiritual prison and Jesus came for the very purpose to set people free and make them whole by His precious Blood.
Isaiah 42 is referenced in Isaiah 61 and Luke 4. Jesus was specific to quote this scripture from Isaiah when He was in the synagogue according to Luke 4:16-19. He was speaking of Himself and why He came. He came to open blind eyes and set the captives free. I believe we are called to do the same, to do just as Jesus did. Jesus said, greater works we would do (John 14).
Isaiah 42 Ministries is a ministry to propel the Gospel of Jesus Christ through evangelism, prophetic words, prophetic worship, encouragement, exhortation, and live preaching and teaching. This ministry pursues to preach the Truth and help equip and mature the Church. This ministry also carries a social media presence and engages with people to help disciple them through podcasts and live e-course teachings. What is your advice to others about maintaining peace in Christ in this chaotic age?
I believe the key to maintaining peace is (John 15:1-5). Jesus said, He is the True Vine, and the Father is the Vinedresser. He calls us to abide in Him because apart from Him we can do nothing. I believe we must Abide in Christ. It is only from the Vine we can receive what is needed to persevere, endure, and overcome.
And we need the Father, the Vinedresser, to cut off what does not need to remain in us. Our communion with the Lord is what will sustain us in the days we are in and the days ahead. Abiding will keep our love from waxing cold.
I remember being taught in ministry at an early age that we need to have thick skin and a soft heart, meaning, don’t allow offense to harden you and keep your love intact. Matthew 24 speaks to perilous times and what this world will look like before the return of Christ. It is written in red, which is Jesus specifically speaking.
Some specific points Jesus makes in scripture are, there will be tribulation, many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. He said false prophets will arise and mislead people, and lawlessness would increase, and many peoples love would wax cold. I think we can agree we are seeing this increasing more in the world we are in today. But Jesus continues to say, but those who endure to the end will be saved and the Gospel will be preached to the whole world.
My advice is we must endure to the end. The only way to endure is to abide in Christ. We cannot do this in our own strength. Everything we need comes from Jesus, the Vine, our Source of Hope and Peace. And we must allow the Vinedresser to keep us pruned that our hearts stay clean and pure. Jesus said in (John 16:33), I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
It is only in Christ that we will find the strength, endurance, peace and perseverance we need in this chaotic world we are in. Jesus is not taken by surprise at these things, which is why He gave us His Word and the Holy Spirit to be our Helper. We are not left alone. We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). Abide, remain pure and continue to testify of His goodness!
*I just want to thank you for reaching out and allowing me to participate in this. I am humbled and honored. To God be all the glory and may He be seen in it all.
