Fayetteville Town Council Recap

The Fayetteville Town Council held their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, September 3, 2026. All Council Members were present with about 15 people in the audience.

The following summary covers highlights from the evening and does not detail every element on the agenda.

The meeting opened with prayer by Eric Snuffer who is President of the Fayette Ministerial Association. Everyone present recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mayor Sharon Cruikshank said the new Fayetteville Welcome Center, located beside the Post Office, will be open next week.

The Mayor announced that on September 25th, Fayetteville will be joining in with a national celebration, Going Pink for the Appalachian Queen, celebrating the legendary Dolly Parton. She suggested that people bring a book to donate to her library.

Council Comments:

Town Recorder, Zenda Vance, said the Trunk or Treat will be happening in town again this Halloween. She also spoke about receiving complaints due to the lack of wheelchair access at the Post Office. Discussion revealed that paint has been donated for the steps at the Post Office, but the Lions Club has hesitated to start their work on it due to concerns about the failing integrity of the concrete and liability issues.

The rough areas on High St. near the new Hill Hall Hotel are now paved and the state removed brush and debris along the road. Ribbon cutting for the new hotel will be on Oct. 6 at 3 pm with the new Secretary of WV Tourism, Kayla Kessinger, being in attendance.

Councilor, Gabe Peña said E.L. Robinson has spent several days in town evaluating infrastructure and drainage issues in light of the recent flooding. He suggested, as did several other council members, using the 1% use tax to fund some of the needed repairs and improvements.

Fayetteville Police Chief Hogan said the Bike Bus, for 3rd grade and up, was going well and kids are really enjoying this means of transportation to school. She said the Bike Bus is like a parade of bikers traveling to school; they are escorted by police for safety and music is played along the way, fostering community.

Visitor Comments:

Mary Rahall spoke about flooding issues on Maple and Fayette Ave. as well as Academy Court. She passed around large photos showing high water and the path of flood waters to all Council Members. She indicated that these were photos of the high water days after the flooding occurred. She made an appeal for the town to investigate the drainage pipes being placed so that water does not flow over the roads creating ice in cold weather months.

Fayette County Commissioner Chuck Miller spoke to introduce himself as the appointed commissioner after the passing of Greg Fernett and gave updates regarding the work that was done at the Fayette County Animal Shelter bridge after the flooding in August.

He stressed the importance of community involvement and said Fayette County could do better at working together to solve problems. He said he has learned that the job is not just two days a month, but 6-7 days a week, every week. He mentioned a first priority was to bring back the flame at the Memorial Building and he is looking forward to more activity at the Memorial Building after the current work is completed.

Eric Snuffer, President of the Ministerial Association and Matt Evans, Executive Director of CODA Academy, spoke about the planned Mini Fall Festival to be held at the Town Park on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 4-7pm.

Snuffer said many families are hurting and in need of help in the Fayetteville area. The event is to be held in collaboration with CODA Academy and will offer free pizza, snacks, live music, door prizes and giveaways.

The festival will also have an artist making balloon-animals and offer face-painting. There may be an opportunity for hay rides as well. The splash pad will be available for this event if weather permits. Both men expressed consideration for neighbors, such as the cemetery, if a funeral service would be taking place during the festival, they would be sensitive to that fact regarding music.

Councilor Brian Good encouraged the men to meet with the Park Board to get pre-approval and the parameters of the venue.

Discussions on sidewalk repairs continued from the last meeting. Mayor Cruikshank said that the town could do sidewalk repairs but an outside contractor would be needed for sidewalk replacement. She said that the language should be changed in the sidewalk levy because most of that money usually goes for paving.

Town Manager Matt Diederich said we need to put a priority list together, a work plan and get bids for sidewalks. Mayor Cruikshank suggested a community meeting to make a comprehensive plan. There was discussion about contacting homeowners to get permission for the town to repair sidewalks on or adjacent to private property.

The next Town Council Meeting is on September 17, 2026 at 6 pm.
